I just had to giggle when I caught wind of this.
They have created a chemical process that can change straight hair into kinky afro hair. Not wavy - not curly. I'm talking straight up kinky!
I first learned about a process many years ago being used in Japan to kink up hair. The device looked similar to a tattoo gun, would grab the end of a small section of hair, and rapidly shake and wind it up, until it turned kinky. From there, people could get dreads or cornrows.
This new process is extremely popular in South Korea and Japan, and is known as the Reggae Perm or Asian Afro Perm. In order to create kinks, new hydrogen bonds need to be formed in the hair. Using small perming rods during the chemical process, stylist are able to create a new shape - thus the kinky hair.
It is so ironic that these straight-haired Asian youth can find beauty in something so many blacks and African-Americans are trying so desperately to erase. - YB

You mean the way so many of us choose to give it up? At least somebody else is starting to honor the things many of us hate about ourselves the most. If we truly own our natural beauty, others will follow. When the Black Panthers began to make the impact they did in the seventies, many whites began to embrace our hairstyles by afroing their hair. Black barbers knew how to do this using laundry booster. I approve this. You can honor the culture in this way, they are not making fun in my opinion. There is an entire subculture in japan that exclusively embraces black culture from the US.

DeleteDon't act like Japan doesn't have racism against black people. I'm Blasian and from Japan. Do you know how RARE it is for a Japanese to be with a black person? My parent's had to leave Japan because I was having my life threatened for being half black. So much ignorance from people in these comments who have no real experience with anything they're defending or talking about. Appropriating culture isn't the same as appreciating it. I'll copy your style, but would never date/marry one of your people, but I'd have sex with them is something OFTEN said by many a Japanese, especially the men. Darker skin is shunned in Japan, even darker Asians are shunned and not considered worthy. Talk about opening one's mouth about a culture they don't know anything about. Don't talk about the workings of a factory you're not employed in. Opinions from a lack of experience doesn't cut it. The love so many black people think is expressed to them in Japan, tells me how VERY LITTLE those that think that's the case know about Japan and Japanese culture. No one is going to be actively racist to your face in Japan, it's cultural anathema, it's about keeping harmony and piece and they will smile in your face while talking all types of hate about you behind your back to their family and closest friends. Learn the culture before thinking there's some sort of appreciation.

ReplyDeleteI don't find the word kinky offensive because that is what my hair does. I find the words nappy and bad hair offensive. Our hair isn't bad, just different. It burns me u up when I hear people say they are going to marry other races so their children won't have nappy hair. If another culture wants to embrace what do many of us want to shun, then I say go ahead.

I think this is progress. It'll be beautiful to have our children grow up and not face the "good hair, bad hair" discrimination we did. I can live in a world where Asians want our hair; I love it!!
